Since Team #1 was formed in December of 1996, FIRST has inspired positive transformation and growth stimulating imagination, aspiration and achievement for student, teacher, engineer, parent, school and community. Now in our twelth FIRST season we find ourselves at the apex of a learning community that’s evolved and strengthen due to our school’s partnerships with 3-Dimensional Services (3-D), DaimlerChrysler and the Chrysler Foundation as well as the influence and inspiration of FIRST’s vision. The students of today’s team have a strong heritage built from a team history of accomplishment that acts as the foundation on which this team stands and moves forward ever improving.

1996 December - Doug Peterson, president of 3-Dimensional Services (3-D), selects OSTCNE to form FIRST partnership from a group of schools they interview and Team #1, the Juggernauts, is formed.

December 1996 – Competed in the Chief Delphi Invitational for the first time.

1997 January – Two instructors, Molly and Thomas Rice of the Robotics Automation program at OSTCNE and Roosevelt Daniel, the Dean of OSTCNE chose students of the Robotics/Automation program and Computer Repair program to form the first, FIRST team at OSTCNE.

1997 Competition Season - Juggernauts learn through their sweat, their successes and their failures what’s expected of them and move to meet the bar set by FIRST.

1997 April - Inspired by the experience of building the FIRST robot with the students and engineers in the 3-D rapid proto-typing facility, Thomas Rice, lead instructor for the Juggernauts and robotics instructor at OSTCNE, submitted a blueprint for a new Engineering Manufacturing Technology (EMT) department at OSTCNE that would emulate a rapid proto-typing facility by clustering the Robotics Automation, Welding and Electricity/Electronics programs to Oakland Schools.

1997 May – Competed in the Society of Manufacturing Engineer’s International Student Robotics Competition.

1997 September – Competitive Engineering Curriculum was designed by Juggernaut lead instructors, Thomas and Molly Rice, to get students from surrounding districts excited about math, science and technology. Competitive Engineering ran after school avoiding conflicts with students’ home school schedules recommending high school credit, was open to all students in Oakland County and used FIRST participation as the carrot to attract students to the program.

1998 January – 1997’s Team Captain, Justin Howard, after receiving a job as an instructional technician at OSTCNE and excited about his previous year’s FIRST experience, comes back and rejoins the team to coach.

1998 February – Juggernauts enrolled in the Computer Engineering Technology career option are involved in the community service project with the Rochester Lions Club where they refurbish donated computers for disabled and needy people.

1998 Competition Season – Juggernauts’ robot ranks 9th in the Robot Competition at the FIRST Nationals and receives Best Defensive Play Award.

1998 April – Competed in the Society of Manufacturing Engineer’s International Robotics Competition.

1998 May – DaimlerChrysler chooses the Robotics Automation program at OSTCNE as a premiere site for the Walter P. Chrysler Manufacturing Technology Academy (MTA) because of its innovative technical curriculum and the inner city population it serves. The MTA is designed as a pre-engineering program with technical skills, workplace skills and integrated high-level academics for university bound students.

1998 December – Juggernauts win the Chief Delphi Invitational.

1999 Competition Season – Juggernauts won the Finalist Award for finishing 2nd Place allied with Team# 5 at the Great Lakes Regional and the FIRST National Robotics Competition for finishing First allied with Aces High and Team 48, Team Elite.

1999 April - 3-D celebrates the team’s success by throwing a banquet at which team members received championship rings, shirts and hats.

1999 May – Juggernauts spread the word of FIRST at an Oakland School’s presentation and has the Oakland School’s superintendent drive the National Championship Robot.

1999 June – Matt Kelly, 1999 Team Captain, gives an inspiring speech at the MTA graduation ceremony about his experience in FIRST.

1999 June – The Pontiac School Board honors Team #1 on their accomplishments.

1999 June – Juggernauts win the West Michigan Invitational and loan out their second string Human Player, Chris McKenzie to Team # 5 so they have enough student, team members to compete. Competed against Team #5 in the Finals.

1999 July – Robot Science & Technology Magazine publishes an article about our winning robot, our team and alliance partners spreading the word of FIRST.

1999 July – Competed in the Rumble at the Rock Competition in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

1999 June – 3-D provides summer internships for students in the MTA.

1999 July – Doug Peterson, President of 3-D, arranges for the Juggernauts to meet than Governor, John Engler and introduce him to FIRST.

1999 August – A physics teacher, Mike McIntyre, former member of the Chief Delphi Team, is hired as MTA Coordinator and becomes a member of Team #1

1999 September – 3-D paid for the Juggernauts to make a Team commercial to spread the message of FIRST that aired on local TV stations.

1999 September – Career Focused Education at Oakland Schools of which OSTCNE is a part applied for ISO 9000 registration.

1999 November - The Lieutenant Governor of Michigan came and visited the Engineering Manufacturing Technology Department at OSTCNE as a result of visit to the Governor the summer before.

1999 December – The Juggernauts competed at the Chief Delphi Invitational.

2000 January – Fox 2 News did a spot on our team and the construction of the 2000 FIRST robot.

2000 February – Juggernauts Erin Lape, Chris Mckenzie and Mike McIntyre gave a presentation at the Governor’s Conference on Career and Technical Education making the Juggernauts influential in getting state funds and support for converting the West Michigan Invitational into the West Michigan Regional.

2000 March – At the Great Lakes Regional Team #1 won the Finalists Award for finishing 2nd in the 67 team tournament, Xerox Creativity Award for displaying the most creative design or use of a component or the most creative or unique strategy of play and the Best Offensive Play for displaying the most effective or unique offensive move or strategy.

2000 March – At the Motorola Midwest Regional Team #1 won the most Photogenic Award honoring attractiveness in engineering and the best looking machine/team combination and the Best Offensive Play for displaying the most effective or unique offensive move or strategy.

2000 April – The Juggernauts were Chairman’s Award Finalists for being in the top 5 out of 400 teams to demonstrate an exceptional partnership effort that best exemplifies the true meaning of FIRST and Mike Vezzetti, Robot Driver, was awarded a $25,000 Scholarship to Drexel University.

2000 May – At the Indiana Invitational Team #1 won the Robot Competition partnered with The Huskie Brigade , Pontiac Northern & GM Powertrain, (their first, First Place win) and Judges Award for being the best all round team.

2000 June – At the West Michigan Invitational won the Robot Competition partnered with OSMTech, Team Rush, and won the Judges Award.

2000 June Team #1’s coaches Mike McIntyre and Justin Howard submitted a proposal for funds to start and implement a Robotics Association latter known as the Oakland County Robotics Association (OCCRA). It was approved and initiated that summer.

2000 July – The Juggernauts won the Robot Competition at the Arkansas Invitational run by the Baxter Bomb Squad as well as the Robot Rumba Award.

2000 August – 3-D opens a new rapid proto-typing facility in Lapeer.

2000 August – Marsha Voncina, a new computer technology and language arts instructor is employed at OSTCNE and joins the Team #1. Marsha previously worked with the FIRST Husky Brigade at Northern High School in Pontiac. Also, her husband, Pete Voncina, a designer at GM becomes a coach for the team.

2000 September – Juggernauts kickoff the pilot of the first Oakland County Competitive Robotics Association (OCCRA) competition season bringing full support and participation of the students and faculty of Team #1 for running the competition.

2000 September – Juggernauts attended the Kettering Invitational and took Second Place.

2000 October – The Juggernauts were invited to set up a display at 3-D’s open house to talk to other companies about sponsoring FIRST teams.

2000 October – The Juggernauts competed in the International Academy’s Sweet Repeat and won First Place in the Robot Competition.

2000 November – Juggernauts in the MTA start work on the Kennedy Project where they design and repair workstations for training severely handicap people for employment.

2001 January – The Walter P. Chrysler Technology Academy (MTA) won the 2001 Governor’s Excellence in Practice Award because the program “exemplifies the highest standards in career preparation,” according to Dr. Barbara Bolin, Director of the Michigan Department of Career Development.

2001 February – Lead Instructor, Thomas Rice, initiates a partnership with Oakland Community College (OCC) where students learn about robot basics in Engineering Manufacturing Technology at OSTCNE and program industrial grade Fanuc robots in the Robotics Lab at OCC earning college credit for OCC’s 150 Robotics Class. (This program has run strong though 2005)

2001 March – A valued coach, Mike McIntyre, leaves his responsibilities with Team #1 to concentrate on the OCCRA project.

2001 March - The Engineering Manufacturing Technology Department whose blueprint written in 1997 was inspired by the FIRST partnership between 3-D and OSTCNE won the Exemplary Career-Technical Education Program Award sponsored by the Michigan Career Leadership Network.

2001 April – The Juggernauts are Chairman’s Finalists for the second year in a row.

2001 May – The Juggernauts did a presentation about FIRST and its impact on involved students, staff and engineers for the Michigan State Superintendent of Education, Mr. Thomas D. Watkins, Jr. and gave him a taste of the experience by allowing him to drive the robot.

2001 June – 3-Dimensional Services became Oakland County Employer of the Year for all their support for educational programs in Oakland County.

September 2001 – OCCRA starts its second season with the Juggernauts at the helm.

9/11/2001 – Tragedy strikes New York City affecting the entire nation and the economy takes a sharp down turn for the worse.

2001 October – The Juggernauts worked the Pontiac Kiwanis’ concession stand at three Detroit Lion’s games this year to earn funds for FIRST team.

2001 November – Because of financial hardships 3-D has to lay off employees and can’t afford to continue sponsoring Team #1. Juggernauts lose their sponsor.

2001 November – The Juggernauts are given the Foundation Award of Excellence during the OCCRA Championship competition for the combined efforts of the team to make this Association a success.

2001 December – The Juggernauts successfully ran the first Annual Oakland County Women’s Robotic Competition at Lawrence Technology University. Male Juggernauts did the setup and ran the event while the female Juggernauts competed along with eleven other female teams from Oakland County school districts.

2002 January – Because of the loss of their sponsor the Juggernauts make the decision to build the robot at the school with the assistance of many of the parents and the faculty in Engineering Manufacturing Technology.

2002 April – The Juggernauts traveled to the Nationals. Wild Stang and the Bomb Squad picked their robot for Finals in their division.

2002 April – Student, Billy Keller, and instructor, Thomas Rice, promoted FIRST and their team’s win of the Great Lakes Regional Chairman’s Award in an interview with Crazy Al when WPON did a radio show at OTCNE promoting Career Technical Education.

2002 May – Delegation of Russian educators toured OTCNE and focused on EMT as an excellent example of manufacturing Career Technical Education. Juggernauts took the opportunity to introduce them to our FIRST program.

2002 May – The DaimlerChrysler Educational Foundation donates $20,000.00 to support Team #1 which is used to pay competition expenses and to buy Lego Mind Storm Kits to be distributed over the next two years to support Lego Leagues.

Elliot tool & Die Facility. DaimlerChrysler engineers also hosted workshops for our students on robotics animation, programming and controls.

2004 April – The Juggernauts Tech Support Team were asked to join dozens of politicians and businessmen gathered 4/20/04 at the groundbreaking for the Southeast Michigan’s new 2.5 million dollar Automation Alley Technology Park in Troy, Michigan. The Juggernauts decided to celebrate this event by retrofitting their robot with a shovel end-of-arm tooling enabling their robot to break ground with the groundbreaking politicians and businessmen. An article appeared in the Oakland Press the next day highlighting this event.

2004 September – Its decided to draw the FIRST Team from the day time school students in the school with Engineering Manufacturing Technology (EMT) as the coordinator of the project. Justin Howard assumes Lead Instructor role with supporting staff from EMT, Business Marketing Management Technology and Transportation Technologies. Students use the FIRST experience as their Capstone Project.

2004 December – OCCRA has its first Awards Banquet celebrating students, coaches, supporting business people and businesses funding the Association. Also, it was a celebration of a successful five-year pilot started and implemented by the Juggernauts, Team #1, in June of 2000. An article in Oakland Press highlighted this event.
